Faculty of Information Technology 15th Anniversary
15th March 1993 - 15th March 2008
 At the end of the 90 decade of the last century, right at the beginning of the social economic renovation movement of the country - DOI MOI - the government of the SR of Vietnam acknowledged soon the great demand of manpower training in the new coming era. Due to the limitation of finance and national budget, of current technological infrastucture and espescially of the lack of qualified human resource (trainer, teacher...), to cope with the next coming development of the national economy at the threashold of the 21st century, the country would have to find issues for the national education in using new training forms and new technics for training.
In 1990, a decision of the prime minister has created 2 new training organizations: the Open Learning Institute - OLI - NoI in Hanoi and the OLI NoII in HoChiMinh City. The principal tasks of the 2 OLIs assigned by the government was to study international experiences in order to adapt new formation forms and technologies to the concrete condition of the country.
In a few years, leaders and principal specialists of OLI NoI have performed serious scientific and pedgogical studies in developed countries all around the world and mainly in neighbour countries: the system of Radio-Television Universities in China, the Open Universities of Thailand SukhoThai Thammathirat and Ramkhamheng, the Universti Ter Buka in Indonesia etc..OLI NoI has also participated as full member of CIFFAD (Cooperation Internationale francophone de Formation à distance - International Co-operation of Worldwide French using countries for Distance Education).
In 1992, leaders of the OLI NoI presetented to the MOET and the governenment the first project of Open and Distance Education in Vietnam in the period 1996 - 2000.
The memorable milestones
* 27th November 1992: Minister of MOET signed the decision on training allowance of 4 pilot fields at Open Learning Institute NoI (presently Hanoi Open University): Business Administration, Accounting, English, and Computer Sciences
* December 1992: Rector of OLI NoI invived the leading scientifics and specialists to establish the acting Academic Board of Information Technology at OLI NoI included:
Prof. Dr. Sc. Phan Dinh Dieu (National Directive Committee of IT), Prof. Dr. Bach Hung Khang, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Xuan Huy, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Gia Hieu (National Institute of ICT) Prof. Dr. Thai Thanh Son, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Duc Nghia, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Ba, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Thuy (Hanoi University of Technology), Prof. Dr. Sc. Nguyen Quang Thai (National Institute of Economic Strategy), and Prof. Dr. Pham Van At (University College of Transport).
* 4th March 1993: decision of MOET on establishing the Faculty of Computer Sciences (FCS) at OLI NoI along with two other Faculties: Economics and Foreign Languages.
The Rector of OLI NoI appointed Prof. Thai Thanh Son as Dean and Mrs. Le Hong Nga, Eng. as Vice -Dean of FCS.
* 15th March 1993 *
Beginning of the first classes of FCS included 26 full time students of class 93-01A and 21 2nd degree specialty students of class 91-01A. The Faculty changed its appellation into Faculty of IT (FIT) decided to take March 15th every year as its Anniversary Date. (The March 4th is a common date for the 3 faculties: Economics, Foreign Languages and FIT)
The specialty of Management Informatics was first time registered for university training in Viet Nam.
* 3rd November 1993: Foundation of the Hanoi Open University (HOU) by a decision signed by the Prime Minister.
Representative from FIT participated to CIFFAD at its annual conference in Mauritius
* October 1995: The first Graduation ceremony for FIT students.
* July 1998: FIT moved to the new Campus at De La Thanh St. (the Campus No2)
The President of HOU decided to create the full-fledged Academic Board of FIT with Prof. Thai Thanh Son as President, Prof. Phan Dinh Dieu as Scientific Advisor, Prof Nguyen Duc Nghia as Vice President, Mr Luong Cao Dong, MS as Scientific secretary.

* January 2001 : Commencing of Distance Training at FIT.

Since 2005, every year, FITHOU received regularly :
- 350 full time students
- 220 part time students
- 100 undergraduate students
- 100 students for 2nd specialty
- 500 students for Open-Distance Training
* 2005 : FITHOU already prepared all pre-requirement to receive the permission from MOET and HOU for postgraduate training in 2 specialties: Software Engineering and Information Systems.
* August 2007 : FIT - HOU moved to the new Campus II in Dinh Cong - South Hanoi

It was 15 years since these first days on 1993... 15 years is only a too short space of time for the history of a University. However in the human life, 15 years is long enough, quite enough so that young high school leavers of some time become today’s skilled experienced experts, and many of them begin to contribute efficaciously to the current development of the new modern - industrial society of Vietnam. Through their activities in all around the country, FIT - HOU could establish a national reliable training address.
From the first classes immatriculated 91-01A, 91-01B to classes 02A, 03A more than 5000 ICT engineers/bachelors, 1000 ICT technicians were graduated from FIT-HOU. After the survey data of MOET (Ministry of Education & Training) in 2001: 94,6 % of FIT-HOU graduated students already got appropriate jobs and positions.
At the present time, graduated students from FIT-HOU were present and some of them played important role in many big/important companies, organizations, institutions of the country in all the 3 economic sectors : public, private and foreign invested.
Many continued to get further training and some were already graduated PhD, Master of Sciences. They all still maintain close relationship with FIT-HOU, in order to help their junior - present students of the FIT-HOU - in first steps of study and working.
FIT-HOU has become a reliable training address in all around the country and has made considerable contribution to the training task assigned by the government : To train 50.000 ICT experts in the period 2001 - 2006 for the country.
Paralelly with training activity, another task - no less important - assigned to FIT-HOU is to carry out scientific research in the area of ICT application, espescially in teaching training technology for Open and Distance education.
Right after the creation of FIT-HOU, tearchers and staff members of the faculty have accepted to complete a branch-project of the important national project assigned to Hanoi Open University: Open learning and Distance education in Vietnam for the period 2001-2006: Challenge and Prospect
In 1993, the Dean of FIT-HOU participated as permanent member of CIFFAD and since 1995, representatives of FIT-HOU participated to other international /regional organizations : UNESCO-APEID (Asia-Pacific Education Innovation for Development) and UNESCO-UNEVOC (Vocational Training).
Since 1993, more than 30 papers, scientific reports...of academic staff members of FITHOU were published in international magazines, conference proceedings: Education - Chulalongkorn University - Thailand, Childhood Education - USA, LearnTech - Germany...and/or websites of many education organizations in Canada ( University of Manitoba - Winnipeg), Malaysia ( OUM), Indonesia ( IDLN), Australia...
In 2000, FIT-HOU organized successfully the important national conference : ICT application in Distance Education in the context of Vietam at the beginning of the 21st century with the participation of many first ranking experts in the country.
Since 2003, staff members from Center for Online Instructional Technology of FITHOU paricipated efficaciously - as Vietnamese partners - to the long term project sponsored by UNESCO: The GMS Virtual University - first project of regional co-operation in Distance Education in the Great Mekong Subregion (included Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar and Yunnan-China).
Studies and results related to the under mentioned fieds of research were presented in many International conferences, symposiums organized by UNESCO, UNEVOC, AAOL ( Asian Association of Open Learning): KuangZhou - China 2001, Winnipeg - Canada 2002, at the Center for Instructional Technology of Utah State University - USA 2002, the 16th AAOL annual conference at Seoul - Korea 2002, 18th annual conference at Jakarta - Indonesia 2004, Bangkok - Thailand 2005, 2006, Shanghai - China 2007...
Through research activities, scientific level and academic experience of young lecturers of FITHOU have got fast progress. In the first shool years 1993 - 1996 almost 100% courses at the FITHOU were done by visiting lecturers/professors invited from other institutions. Since 1997, 1998 the faculty has its own academic staff members, more than 50% of them are postgraduated and now, these young competent and ardent lecturers can already assure more than 75% special courses in the training curriculum of the faculty.

15 years passed very quickly...
Reminiscing about achievements reached by FITHOU during this time, staff members and students of FITHOU never forget difficulties we have had to overcome in the first period and also never, never forget the contribution of first generation of founders (alas, some of them already passed away). Proud of our tradition but do not forget the past, lecturers and students of FITHOU firmly believe that we are now ready to continue to write more brilliant pages of the annals of the faculty.
For conclusion, we would like to evoke 2 sentences we have spoken in the festival of FITHOU 10th anniversay celebration organized at VAN MIEU - the first antique university in the history of Vietnam :
